X-Men: 10 Massive Questions About Its Confusing Canon

8. Where Does Deadpool Fit?

Speaking of Deadpool, there€™s a bit of a question mark hanging over the film in terms of where it actually fits in relation to the X-Men franchise€™s overarching narrative. The film itself pokes fun at this predicament, with Ryan Reynolds€™ character at one point asking whether the current Professor X looks like €˜McAvoy or Stewart€™, because the timeline has gotten €˜so confusing€™. The film gives no answer to this question, and uses humour to deflect it instead. This, of course, is exactly what you€™d expect from Wade Wilson, the wisecracking Merc With The Mouth. But, I think we can determine when the film takes place, if not what the main X-Men look like at the time; the film seems to be set in the modern day of 2016, placing it seven years prior to Wolverine waking up in 2023 at the end of X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Deadpool, then, must take place in the rebooted timeline enabled by the events of Days Of Future Past, in which the Sentinels never took over the planet and Xavier's school thrived. X-Men: Apocalypse takes place in 1983, meaning that the First Class iterations of the core cast (McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence et al) have a long way to go until they catch up to Deadpool. As to whether McAvoy or Stewart was occupying the X-Mansion during the events of Deadpool, it doesn€™t really matter. Nobody outside of Fox's inner sanctum will ever know for sure, unless a future film attempts to clarify the timeline in a clearer way.
