X-Men: 10 Massive Questions About Its Confusing Canon

4. Can The Original Characters Die?

Wolverine wakes up in 2023, and everything is hunky dory. Jean Grey is alive again, as is Scott Summers. Rogue and Bobby are holding hands, while Colossus and Kitty Pryde teach a class. Storm and Charles are safe, too, even though they can€™t remember the events of the movie. This was a lovely little scene for fans of the original X-Men trilogy, but it also raised some big questions€ If Wolverine has met these characters in 2023, does that mean that their future is set in stone? Are Jean and Scott et al safe from ever dying, because Wolverine already knows where they€™ll end up? Wouldn€™t that be a bit rubbish (think: Star Wars prequels), knowing what happens to all the characters? According to director and franchise founder Bryan Singer, fans needn€™t worry. "What I€™m doing with these in-betweenquels is playing with time€™s immutability and the prequel concept, meaning that yes we erased those storylines and anything can happen," he told Collider during the production of X-Men: Apocalypse. €œI€™ll kill any of those characters any day I want. They€™re all fair game€, he promised, discussing the characters glimpsed in 2023 at the end of Days Of Future Past. It€™s still possible to €œupset the timeline€, he teased, meaning that X-Men: Apocalypse€™s new versions of Jean, Scott and Storm can still face mortal danger. Well, following continuity hasn't been his best skill thus far.
