X-Men: Apocalypse - 11 Things To Expect Now We've Seen Days Of Future Past
8. Humanity Beware!
Apocalypse will be another massive comic book event, especially with the immediate success of Days Of Future Past, even if writer Simon Kinberg seems intent on likening it to the least favourable cinematic reference point, as he did in a recent interview with IGN:
The thing that weve spent the most time talking about is not just the visual execution of the character, which is its own challenge creating a character thats the most powerful I think of any mutant villain that weve seen in the X-Men movies so far, more powerful than Magneto. The kind of scope and scale were talking about is like disaster movie, extinction level event. Sort of Roland Emmerich-style moviemaking, which youve never seen in an X-Men movie, or any superhero movie, which I think is exciting.
A mutant disaster movie is a good thing, and having humans again as the target and not mutants will go some way to bringing back the most intriguing political and cultural undertones (of social anxiety, immigration fears and the enduring allegory of racism) that could have been wiped out by the relatively happy ending that saw the abandonment of Trask's Sentinel programme. Fundamentally, it also allows for some of that good old fashioned action with high costs and a genuine threat level. Clearly, Apocalypse does not like killing mutants, as that would be counter to his agenda, but he will be forced to re-evaluate when the X-Men take up arms against him, so we can probably also expect a death count, considering his unprecedented powers.
