X-Men: Apocalypse - 8 Ways The New Trailer Killed Your Anticipation
4. Apocalypse Feels Like A Villain Of The Week
Across the length of X-Men: Apocalypse's marketing campaign, 20th Century Fox have teased Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse as something akin to the "big bad" of the entire franchise. Audiences have been made to feel as though this guy is serious business; that he's the antagonist that the X-Men characters have been working towards for the sum of the franchise. Until the new trailer dropped, they'd almost convinced us that was the case. Now, having seen Apocalypse in a bit more detail, the character just feels a little bit... well, silly? That's not an attack on Isaac's performance, because he's a fine actor and whatever he delivers is sure to be super entertaining. But looking at the latest footage, he doesn't seem anywhere near as threatening as the studio have made him out: Apocalypse just doesn't have the magnitude or the weight of a colossal villain (like the MCU's Thanos). Exactly why that is is hard to fathom. Maybe it's the costume and the make-up, which kind of paints him as one of those bad guys you'd get in a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or something - a villain of the week, à la Power Rangers.
