It's been two years since Fable studio Lionhead closed, and six more than that since the last main series instalment. Ever since, the franchise has faded away, reappearing only in remasters and Hearthstone-inspired collectible card titles. Many gamers are convinced Microsoft has completely given up on the franchise, leaving it to slowly drift away.
However, there were rumblings the IP isn't dead yet. Many have speculated on what developer Playground Games is working on, with Xbox head Phil Spencer only confirming that it's an open world RPG title.
Well, considering that they'd hired a second team of developers and filled it with former Bioware and Rocksteady employees, clearly they're investing quite a bit in the project.
But is it likely to be a Fable game? The success of new IPs like Horizon Zero Dawn must have Xbox feeling more comfortable attempting to start new franchises rather than simply having to try and restart existing ones. Besides, after so much time since a quality Fable title and all of these new studio acquisitions, it doesn't seem likely that they'd go back to an IP known best for getting overhyped.
