10 "Next Big Thing" Video Games Nobody Is Playing

9. Okami

Okami is a truly gorgeous game, and one which holds an unfortunate world record: it has the lowest sales of any game ever to win a major Game Of The Year award.

These sales figures? Around 200,000 in the first year, meaning it was outside the top 100 selling games in its year of release, 2006. For reference, 2018’s major Game Of The Year winners God Of War and Red Dead Redemption sold 10 million and 17 million in the same length of time.

Admittedly, modern games sell more, but even in 2006, Oblivion won Game Of The Year at the same time as Okami, and sold 3.5 million.

Okami has been rereleased time and again on different consoles, and the figures finally look a bit healthier. Originally out for PS2 & Wii, it’s been ported to the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch, bringing its lifetime sales up to 2.8 million.

That’s far more respectable, but Okami’s cel shaded mix of action adventure meets Zelda through the eyes of a wolf was supposed to be a game changer. Now, it’s just a curious footnote in history.
