10 Absurdly Hard DLC Modes You Never Beat

8. The Final Horizon - Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers’ increase in quality over many past titles in the series generated a lot of goodwill in fans. Unfortunately, the final free update - The Final Horizon - tarnished this. Many Sonic superfans and streamers took to social media to complain about the DLC upon release, chastising Sonic Team for overcorrecting after the base game was called “too easy”.

Whilst The Final Horizon is a promising order at first, containing an alternative ending and three new playable characters, its legacy is that of the hardest Sonic gameplay perhaps ever - including the games that are so broken that they barely run at all.

The changes to the map that now include some incredibly tough platforming challenges are the worst offenders. Whilst most Sonic games come with a certain degree of jank, most don’t have impossibly tall towers that take almost a literal minute to fall from if you make a mistake, charging you with having to climb it again.

That increased jank actually appears across many of The Final Horizon’s new stages, especially as they need to take into account the inclusion of Tails, Knuckles and Amy as playable characters. At least the boss rush mode works as intended - although, again, it’s worth avoiding since Sonic can’t take a single hit during the entire process.

There’s difficulty spikes, and then there’s this: a thousand feet plummet down into hell.
