Sonic 06 is the snotty little brother of the gaming world and the one game that almost heralded the end of one of the industry's most successful mascots. The game was intended to be a cinematic and gripping reboot for the franchise, but quickly fell into problems following Yuji Naka's departure.

Upon release, Sonic the Hedgehog became the walking embodiment of releasing a game that was nowhere near finished. A whole slew of bugs, glitches, long loading times and questionable creative choices were present in the game, leading to most of the characters being introduced in the game being quickly written back out again.

One exception was Mephiles the Dark, the game's big baddie. Accidentally released by Shadow, Rouge and Dr. Eggman, Mephiles is an evil spirit that attempts to change the past by bonding with the demonic monster, Iblis.

Mephiles is shown to be immensely powerful, but also incredibly cunning through his manipulation of Silver and ability to morph into different forms. He would be one of the few returning characters introduced in the game, returning in Sonic Forces during the Mephiles the Dark Event.

Sonic 06 is far from the big epic blockbuster Sega were hoping for but in Mephiles, at least, they succeeded in nailing a suitable villain.
