10 AMAZING Video Games That Didn't Get Sequels
6. Vagrant Story
The PlayStation was a golden age of the JRPG genre, and with Final Fantasy IX scheduled for release in July 2000, there’s every chance Vagrant Story got lost amidst the hype for that latest instalment in the ludicrously popular franchise.
Vagrant Story was also notoriously difficult; the game was less an RPG and more a dungeon crawler. Combat was complex; battles took place in real-time but could be paused while the player accessed menus, like a traditional RPG. Enemies individual body parts could be targeted and damaged to gain a tactical advantage. The game’s depth was a welcome change to Square’s other RPG’s and was positively cited in many reviews.
Taking on the role of Ashley Riot (quite possibly a rejected first-draft name for Cloud Strife) - a member of a militarised religious faction – you are tasked with hunting down a heretical cult hiding somewhere in the ruined city of Lea Monde.
Vagrant Story’s plot was almost as complex as the gameplay, filled with political intrigue and betrayal. It has since been referenced in several Final Fantasy games and has even been proposed to be set in Ivalice - the world in which Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII take place.
Indeed, Vagrant Story is significantly different, and a full sequel would be most welcome.
