10 AMAZING Video Games That Didn't Get Sequels
5. The World Ends With You
The World Ends with You (TWEWY) gained positive critical reception upon release in 2007 for the Nintendo DS; sporting an evocative name and a graffiti-inspired art style, the game stood out amongst Square Enix’s RPG portfolio.
The gameplay was also a significant departure.
TWEWY employed every gimmick that the DS had: Combat commands were executed by drawing symbols on the touch screen, and the DS’s microphone was also extensively used. The pervasive use of touch screen controls did get a little obnoxious - the game is hard, and the non-traditional control scheme further added to the difficulty - but in general it worked and was a welcome change to other contemporary JRPG’s.
TWEWY is set in an alternative version of Shibuya, where the recently deceased participate in the Reaper’s Game to win the ultimate prize - to be resurrected and granted a second chance.
An expanded version of the game dubbed, The World Ends with You: Final Remix, was released for Nintendo Switch in 2018. The game’s producer, Tetsuya Nomura, gave an interview suggesting he’d tried several times to greenlight a sequel, but was unsuccessful.
Hopefully, the Switch port sold well enough to justify a fresh entry in the series.
