The Smash games are almost legendary at this point. From their humble beginnings on the Nintendo 64, it has become one of the most popular series on Nintendo consoles. Esports have even grown up around the franchise with thousands of dollars being given as prizes.

Not bad from what the developer Masahiro Sakurai called an “Experiment” in gaming.

The first game was a classic of the Nintendo 64 but we’re talking about Super Smash Melee for the GameCube. This was one of the first games released for the GameCube. There was only one problem? To be one of the first, it was going to have to be developed quickly.

This game needed to highlight the graphical jump from one console to the next, it had to be a showpiece that would draw people to buy the new console. The development was a difficult process that included a great deal of overtime and stress. The team did it though, and in 13 months.

The best bit of all? Even with the small time frame the team was very happy with the quality of their work and some fans of the series still consider this the best smash game to date. So, you can make quality quickly. It just takes a lot of work.
