Max Payne 3 did not quite take off in the way Rockstar would have hoped and that is a shame because it really is a stellar shooter. The fact that it was made by Rockstar perhaps did it a disservice as many gamers were hoping for a game similar to GTA and when it became apparent that this was not the case some fans were left feeling disappointed.

They really shouldn’t be though, as Max Payne 3 shows Rockstar at the top of their game. It weaves a mature, tragic story which jumps across multiple time periods as you play Max trying to pick up the pieces of his life after the events of the first two games.

It is a straightforward shoot ‘em up with the series’ trademark bullet time thrown in for good measure and it is a blast! The bullet time mechanic allows you to perform some death defying stunts and, for the final kill, you can slow time down to revel in your enemy’s gory demise. This often results in shoot outs that would put a Hollywood blockbuster to shame, with the surrounding scenery being blown to bits as you duck and cover amongst the rubble.

The fact it is not as sprawling as Rockstar’s trademark series, whilst being a disappointment to some, is actually a good thing as it allows them to focus on the gunplay which is flawless. For an extra challenge, see if you can complete it on the hardest mode without using bullet time.
