3. Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption Train Robbery

After the success of GTA, Rockstar decided to spread their wings a little and apply the formula to the Old West, revisiting an old title of theirs, Red Dead Revolver. The result was Red Dead Redemption, an absolutely stunning open world adventure that is rightly considered one of the best games of last generation.

The story follows John Marston as he attempts to bring his old gang leader to justice, with the kicker being that the federal government are holding his wife and child until he completes the job.

What follows is a wild west adventure that rivals the very best that Hollywood has to offer, with Rockstar managing to cram every genre convention you can think of into the 40 hour campaign. As you roam the plains of America and Mexico you will be involved in horse races, train chases, saloon shootouts, and duels all accompanied by a score that sounds like it has been ripped out of a Sergio Leone classic.

In true Rockstar fashion, there are a huge number of surprises to be discovered across the map and, with Undead Nightmare, one of the finest DLCs of last generation as you come up against a zombie horde with your trusty Smith & Wesson. If you are looking forward to the next game in the series you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy, and for this price, there really is no excuse.
