Remasters are this console generation's answer to 'exclusives'. At the time of writing, half of the PS4's top ten ranked games are remasters of previous-gen classics, while only one is a PS4 exclusive. On the Xbox One, four out of the top ten are previous-gen games, with no exclusives in sight. And why should Microsoft or Sony change that? The best games of the last generation are still excellent, looking stunning with a few tweaks, and without any reverse compatibility to speak of (on the PS4, at least), why not resell them as the ultimate, definitive, all-D
LC-included editions? It's safe, it's guaranteed money and, unfortunately, it's killing creativity in AAA games. There's not only a glaring shortage of IPs on both major consoles, but a lack of new ideas coming from the other big publishers we used to look up to most. Konami has all but confirmed that it doesn't care for the industry anymore, while Capcom, EA and (to a lesser extent) Ubisoft are just sticking to what they know - ruining franchises like Resident Evil, Sim City and Dungeon Keeper in the process.
The reluctance of biggest publishers in offering us truly new, unique experiences should take its toll, but ultimately if we keep buying into rinse-and-repeat franchises and remasters, then this easy money trend will only continue. Which brings me to my final point...
