10 Arcade Video Games To Make You Feel Like A Kid Again

6. After Burner II

Designing arcade cabinets in the late eighties must've been the equivalent of being involved in music in the late sixties. Except without all the sex and drugs. Well, maybe. The levels of creativity and ideas were off the chart, and this was no more evident in the cabinet for Sega's high-octane jet fighter title, After Burner II.

The game itself was great, flying your fighter plane at ridiculous speeds whilst blowing up all and sundry that appeared around you. But what tipped After Burner II into unforgettable infamy, was the design of the arcade cabinet itself. It was made to resemble an actual cockpit, with the whole cabinet moving in time with your in-game movements of the plane.

If you were prone to car-sickness as a child, After Burner II was clearly not the game for you.

ABII was ported to home consoles and while these versions were great too, they could never replicate the magic of the cockpit cabinet. These days though we have VR at our fingertips and we can only imagine how amazing a VR After Burner II would be like.

Sega, for the love of all that's holy, make After Burner II in VR. RIGHT NOW.
