6. Himiko - Tomb Raider

It's an understatement to say that the Tomb Raider franchise was in need of a shot in the arm. It seemed to be suffocating under its own weight, lost in an endless sea of two-dimensional characters and questionable narrative directions. So when it was announced that Lara Croft was going to be rebooted under developer Crystal Dynamics, it was met with a great amount of curiosity. And it has since become a huge success for them, selling nearly six million units. It took the character back to basics, and stranded her on an island that was being ravaged by Himiko, an ancient sun queen. She only wanted one thing; to transfer her spirit into Lara's friend, Sam. As she pelted the island with storms that prevented Lara from leaving, it became clear that this was going to come down to one battle. Lara vs. Himiko. Bring it on. Except, it never got brought. Himiko was simply a stand-in, doing practically nothing in the final harrowing moments of the game. Lara simply stabs her, again via cut-scene, and Himiko goes down like a chump. For all her bluster, Himiko was nothing but a blow hard.
