1. HIKEBACK
HIKEBACK is easily one of the more unique horror titles that can be accessed online for free. It follows the formula of an interactive narrative adventure, you choose different actions and dialogue options in order to progress the story. The game has multiple endings and is a more surreal form of horror, each ending taking you back to the main menu, prompting you to restart. Upon each restart, decisions are different and the narrative unfolds in a different way.
The game opens, as most of these titles seem to, with a lonely drive through a dark forest. You pick up a hitchhiker, only to be instantly murdered by said hitchhiker (who could've seen that one coming?), with the game prompting you to start again. The second time, you get decisions in the form of dialogue with the stranger that killed you the previous time, the protagonist has no recollection of the previous event. The game continues on this surreal narrative path, drawing from aspects of traditional ghost stories and other horror films. HIKEBACK boasts an impressive 15,000 words of dialogue and around 18 different endings. Not only this, but the game has an incredibly eerie and fitting soundtrack that is obviously inspired by titles such as Silent Hill.
For a horror game that is entirely free and playable through your browser, it does not get much better than HIKEBACK.
