10 Awesome Games You Definitely Missed In 2024

3. Still Wakes the Deep

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
The Chinese Room

Developer The Chinese Room (Dear Esther, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture) returns with a more overt leap into card-carrying horror territory with the intoxicatingly atmospheric Still Wakes the Deep.

Set aboard an oil rig in the 1970s as it becomes overrun by monstrous creatures, comparisons to John Carpenter's The Thing are both inevitable and well-earned, for this similarly emphasises the terror of facing off against an unknown force while isolated from the rest of the world.

Though defined by relatively simple exploration, stealth, and puzzle-solving mechanics, the game positively drips eeriness from every pore, aided by the imposing, claustrophobic design of the oil rig, oppressively harsh weather, and persuasive performances from its incredible voice cast.

And better yet, while the similarly premised Alien: Isolation wildly outstayed its welcome, this thing clocks in at a svelte 4-5 hours. All the same, Still Wakes the Deep swiftly came and went this past summer without making much of an impact.
