10 Awesome Indie Games You Need To Play Immediately

3. €˜Splosion Man

€˜Splosion Man feels like a throwback game dedicated to pyromaniacs. The titular character was created in a lab solely from explosive materials, so €œself exploding€ is how you defeat enemies and jump around the level. The explosive material must have contained traces of caffeine in it because €˜Splosion Man is literally one of the most hyper characters I€™ve seen in a game; which adds nothing but charm.

It is a platformer with some very challenging puzzles. Early on you learn tricks of the trade like bouncing off walls a la Mega Man to reach high platforms and the use of explosive containers that shoot you around the level similar to the barrels in SNES Donkey Kong games. I advise that you don€™t let the easy mechanics fool you; there are plenty of challenges throughout €˜Splosion Man€™s fifty levels.

Developer Twisted Pixel knows a thing or two about presentation and humor. Their first game, The Maw, featured a vibrant art style and solid comedy. €˜Splosion Man built on this foundation in a big way with hilarious cut scenes and entertaining animations. A sequel to the game, Ms. €˜Splosion Man, was released on XBLA in 2011 and well received. It was also released on iOS and Windows Phones earlier this year.
