Luigi’s Mansion was originally designed around more mature themes – and was planned as a much darker game, replete with a much more unsettling tone. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo axed the idea, and turned the game into a more child-friendly experience – probably to avoid distancing a massive portion of their own audience – the result something of a hybrid, equal parts inoffensive and unnerving.

As such, there were countless memorable moments scattered throughout the game – moments that single-handedly defined people’s experiences with the entire console. In particular, the discovery of Mario – trapped unceremoniously inside a painting – is a standout, representing a pivotal moment within the game. After all, it’s the point when you realise you’re completely alone, as well as vastly outnumbered. Mario isn’t somewhere in the mansion, ready to help. He’s trapped in another realm, calling for help – reinforcing the game’s strong emphasis on personal isolation.
