10 Awesome Platformers Not Made By Nintendo

4. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

Castlevania Symphony Of The NightKonamiThe Castlevania series has been one of the most prolific video game franchises over the past few decades. Since the first game was released in 1986 for the NES, the series has tried its best to offer dark and engaging gameplay in a platformer setting. Perhaps one of the best games in this great series is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, released in 1997 for the Playstation. The game came into the world at a time where many games were getting a 3D overhaul, and 2D games were starting to become a thing of the past. However, despite its rather dated look, the gameplay of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is compelling, and has led it to be one of the best video games of all time. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was actually a big deviation from its predecessors, and can certainly be given the credit for any acclaim that recent Castlevania games have received. Channeling its inner Metroid roots, the game crosses classic 2D side-scroller gameplay with RPG elements that make the player keep playing to level up. The graphics, for what its worth, absolutely do their job, and reveal an expansive and interesting castle for the player to explore. The game also features a knockout musical score that keeps the game fresh, even after hours of playing.
