10 Awesome Sega Mega Drive Games You've Never Played

5. Herzog Zwei

When the good folks at Technosoft created this exemplary title, they scored something of a gaming brace by not only developing one of the first real-time strategy games - trailblazer Dune didn't arrive until 1992, two years after the release of Herzog Zwei - but crafted one that was as frustrating as it was rewarding. Putting players in the cockpit of a mech-like fighter craft that can morph into a land-roaming robot at the press of a button, the game allowed you to choose a terrain, difficulty and let merry battle commence. With a craft that runs out of fuel within a matter of seconds, the key to Herzog Zwei's gameplay was to create troops, be it some sci-fi grunts to go take down a vital outpost or a tough tank to mount an attack on the enemies main base, while you carefully whiz around issuing orders. Arguably the inspiration for pillaring entries in the genre such as Command & Conquer, Starcraft and the underrated Total Anhilation, none of these followers can rival the addictive simplicity of this title. Climbing the summit of an uber steep learning curve has never been so fun.
