Dealing out some well deserved punishment to an enemy? Satisfying. Serving it up to them with their own weapon? Delicious

Such would have been the fate of the Combine Soldiers from the groundbreaking Half Life 2 if initial plans had come to fruition. Although the game is lauded as near perfect in most circles, over the course of its protracted development many ideas had to be downsized or discarded, even if they were complete enough to make it into the deceptively named 'Half Life 2 Beta'; a collection of source code from development which was infamously leaked in 2003.

Amongst the features revealed from the leak was the Combine Guard; a hulking brute wielding a powerful disintegration beam cannon which Gordon Freeman would have the pleasure of wielding after its defeat.

Following some major overhauls of the game, the Combine Guard was cut in its entirety, and assets were reworked for different enemies. The weapon itself would be repurposed for the towering Strider, although this version of the weapon would not be wieldable by the player.

A disintegration beam cannon is always something it's a shame to miss out on. Oh well, maybe it'll be in Half Life 3.
