When The Sims first released in 2002, it isn't an understatement to say it revolutionised the gaming industry. A sandbox life simulator, the series grew a massive fanbase by allowing players to take the role of a possibly benevolent, but unquestionably omnipotent, deity and tasked them with overseeing the daily lives of a family as they fulfilled everyday tasks.

You know, cooking, cleaning, mysteriously getting stuck in a pool without a ladder... that kind of thing.

With all that in mind, it's not surprising that EA made the decision to take the series into the world of MMOG's with 2002's The Sims Online. Bearing a number of similarities to its offline counterpart, TSO also allowed players to socialise with friends around the world and take part in a virtual economy.

However, despite being the undisputed king of its genre in the offline sphere, The Sims Online had to attempt to establish a market share against massively multiplayer giants such as Second Life, and a failed rebrand as EA Land spelt the end for the game with its servers being permanently shut down in August 2008.
