10 Awesome Video Games You Had No Idea Were Getting Movies

2. Minecraft

Mario And Luigi
Mojang

A Minecraft film has been towed since 2012 however Mojang had been unwilling to greenlight anything but 'the right idea'. A commendable action, given the fact that most of the entries on our list are probably going to suck as bad as the dozens of video game movies that came before them.

In February of 2014 the creator of Minecraft, Markus 'Notch' Persson claimed that he was in talks with Warner Bros. over a movie deal - however Microsoft's acquisition of Mojang in May of that year likely derailed anything from occurring, given the fact that they missed their planned release date of May, 2019. However the effort has allowed a project to springboard from it.

Peter Sollett, director of Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist, is helming the script and direction of the new project which has a release planned for March, 2022. No word on stars or even whether it will be live-action or animated, the plot seems to pretty cut and dry: The Elder Dragon is going to destroy the world, so a young lady must gather a group of heroic associates to stop it.

Here's hoping it turns out as well as, if not better, than Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode which received mixed reviews. Also no word on how much say 'Notch' will have in development, given Microsoft's recent policy of distancing themselves from him due to his history of white supremacist rhetoric.
