10 Awesome Ways Video Games Got Back At Critics

1. A Snob Critic Is One Of The Game's Bosses - Psychonauts

Though cult classic platformer Psychonauts received wild raves from most reviewers, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer is no stranger to clapping back against his critics, having worked as one of the lead designers of the aforementioned Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, and also the brilliant-but-divisive Grim Fandango.

Grim Fandango was lauded for its art style and atmosphere but also criticised by many for its off-kilter puzzles, which some deemed more frustrating than smart.

Seemingly as a retort to this, Psychonauts - which was Schafer's very next game - featured a boss by the name of Jasper Rolls, a snooty critic who lives within the mind of actress Gloria Von Gouton.

During the fight, Rolls throws out stereotypically hollow critical adjectives like "tedious," "monotonous," and "just plain bad."

In a genius added flourish, though, Jasper doesn't die when you defeat him, but simply shrink down to such a small size that his squeaky voice is imperceptible to Gloria and everyone else.
