10 Awful Plot Twists That Completely Ruined Great Games
10. Condemned - Your Mouth Turns Into Jowls
Have you seen the ending to Michael Jackson's Thriller? Where you think everything is A-okay, and the whole torturous affair, Vincent Price narration, red velvet jacket, and all - was just a dream. Then Mr. Jackson turns to the camera and his eyes glow yellow and a sinister laugh is heard. If you've played and beat Condemned: Criminal Origins, the above scene will flash through your brain. In the cheapest of cheap twists, upon beating Condemned, it's revealed your character, Ethan, has become infected by the very same demonic power that created the enemies in the game. The problem with this is that it feels woefully cheap and overdone. Dude looking into a mirror, then a shock-scare? What is this, 1998? Up until the ending, Condemned was masterful at building suspense and terror without a ton of cheap scares. In fact the biggest take-away from the game, spook-wise is just how terrifying clothing mannequins can be in the dark. Condemned was great at zagging when you expected it to zig, and it's unfortunate that that many player's lasting image of this fairly unique game will forever be the cheesy, been-there-done-that ending.
