10 Awful Plot Twists That Completely Ruined Great Games
9. Far Cry 3 - Win Or Lose, You're An A-Hole!
Far Cry 3's narrative is pretty incredible. For starters it had the gall to present generally unlikable characters, including the protagonist Jason Brody, and then force the player to associate with them. As the game goes on Jason becomes tougher, edgier, and more assertive as his power grows and the player's skills increase. Eventually Jason is forced to choose between his path - the way of the warrior - that has brought him confidence and a fullness to his empty life that he used to placate with club drugs and partying, or saving his friends and leave the island with them. Choosing to stay on the island results in you slaughtering your girlfriend, getting treated to some digitised boobies while impregnating Citra, then getting killed by her as she claims the child you've now sired will go on to lead the tribe to greatness. That's great, but doesn't he need a Dad? If you choose to stay with your friends, a whole bunch of crazy stuff goes down, a few supporting characters end up dead, and you make it off the island as Jason narrates how he's changed and worried he could never go back to the way he was. The problem with both these endings and the twists contained within them is that they feel rushed and constrained, especially for a game that was so wide-open otherwise. While the shock value of both options is real and will give you pause, there's an underwhelming nature to it all, and you can't help but wonder if perhaps there was another, more logical way, to end Jason Brody's journey. As a result, the wonderful game feels ruined at the end, like they had ball in their court and decided to pass it out of bounds.
