8. Final Fantasy IX - Kuja Gets Fab-i-fied.
Final Fantasy IX is a favorite among Japanese RPGs fans for a few reasons. For starters it was less deadly serious than Final Fantasy VII or VIII, and as a result felt a lot more whimsical, fun, and flat-out enjoyable than the previous two games in the series while still harboring quite a bit of heart and drama via the stories of ViVi, Dagger, and Xindane. One of the fun in the not-so-good way elements of Final Fantasy IX was its villain, Kuja - specifically at the moment he enters 'Trance' mode. Up until that point Kuja was a wonderfully menacing presence. He wasn't grim or gritty, he was an over-the-top, giddy, mass murdering sociopath that was frightening because of how left-of-center he was - it's not every bad guy who can call someone a canary and rock a feather in their hair, get away with it, and still be a terrifying presence. But the problem with having such a strange villain is that it's a fine line between menacing and comical. When Kuja enters his 'trance' state toward the end of Final Fantasy IX, you may just start to wonder if the Golden Saucer is having a rave and you weren't invited. At this moment Kuja goes from a menacing and kinda / sorta sympathetic character to something resembling a cartoon, and what was supposed to be an important moment in that character's development was met with laughter. Did this twist 'ruin' Final Fantasy IX? Yeah, in that the game's villain was suddenly a joke. Kuja becomes essentially a cartoon character and loses quite a lot of his imposing nature. It seemed Square was aware that Kuja seemed far less scary once he entered 'trance' as he wasn't even the final boss of the game, that particular honor going to Necron, whose quote from Yoda in Star Wars Episode One is a twist that belongs on another, weirder, possibly more positive list.
