10 Awful Video Games With AWESOME Mechanics

4. Terrain Alteration - Fracture

There are certain games like Portal or Braid that harbour such an inventive mechanic, the entire game revolves around it.

With that in mind, there was a lot of buzz for the terrain deformation ability in Fracture, which allows players to raise and lower the ground in real time. This technique brings a whole new element to the futuristic shooter since you need to create cover walls and build slopes to reach inaccessible areas while blasting enemies in the face.

Though this literally groundbreaking tool could've been gimmicky, the developers found neat ways to implement it into level structure, combat, and puzzles. (Also, timing the mechanic just right to hurl enemies sky high is infinitely satisfying.)

However, the creators spent so much time perfecting this tool, they forgot about... everything else. The environments are drab, the character models lack detail, the animations are stiff, honestly, we could go on and on... and we just might. The soundtrack is forgettable, the voice acting is uninspired, and the general presentation is lacklustre.

Although the terrain deformation is awesome, you'll soon tire of it since Fracture has nothing else to offer.
