9. Withstanding Torture (Metal Gear Solid)

It's fair to say that Solid Snake was put through the ringer by the time the credits roll on Metal Gear Solid, and this would be the moment where it could have proved all too much. The moment in question has Snake trapped by Revolver Ocelot, strapped to a torture machine, having electricity pumped into him until he gives in.

For the purposes of the article we have decided to overlook the fact that you could give in to the torture and allow your beloved Meryl to die because, well, that would be distinctly uncool. Of course, if you ever played Track and Field, your thumbs would have laughed at the relatively easy torture scene; but that doesn't make it any less of a memorable moment. It does wonders for Snake's character as well, being that he won't let a hefty dose of electricity stop him from achieving his ultimate goal. It's a rather difficult (in the emotional sense) scene as Snake is in obvious, considerable pain but his refusal to give in cemented his status as one of, if not the most badass characters in gaming.
