10 Baffling Oversights In Otherwise Great Video Games
6. Far Cry 2 Makes Exploration As Frustrating As Possible
Although more of a precursory experiment to what would later go on to become Far Cry 3, this humble predecessor absolutely nailed a feature which would soon become a franchise staple: an absolutely gorgeous game world. From its sprawling map, extensive wildlife and regular garrisons of mercenary hideouts to find, the game absolutely begged you to explore its hugely robust environment.
Unfortunately though, the developers made one glaring oversight that made traversing the exotic landscape of this experimental title completely unbearable. Littered throughout the map - like in its sequels - Far Cry 2 featured gang hideouts and checkpoints that you had to fight you way through. However unlike what would come next, the game immediately re-spawned these defeated enemies as soon as you had left the general vicinity.
Which meant that to get anywhere, you’d have to destroy the same checkpoints and get chased by the same group of enemies again and again for the full length of the campaign. Unfortunately, this meant that fast travel was the preferred method of transport and as a result few players ever saw the full scale of Far Cry 2’s expansive map.
