There was a time when X-Games dominated the world, you couldn't go outside without seeing someone on a skateboard or BMX bike doing things you couldn't even imagine trying. And it all translated into the gaming world as well, which thanks to the likes of Tony Hawk's, was a large part of the reason why.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Aggressive Inline, Freekstyle, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX and SSX are all just a few of the many games to come from this genre. Notice how every single one of these games covers a separate extreme sport as well. Skateboarding, inline skating, motocross, BMX and snowboarding. It was one of the best represented genres, with the best game soundtracks ever - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, anyone?

Now, these sports just aren't as popular as they once were, especially in the gaming world. The Skate franchise was the last string we had tied to it, which has since been severed. And the failed reboot of the THPS franchise was the final nail in the coffin.

Yes, Steep, an open world extreme snowboarding game is coming out very soon, but it's doubtful it will spark a resurgence in the genre.
