10 Beloved Video Game Moments That Would Be Too Offensive In 2017

7. Cross-Dressing Cloud & Portrayals Of Gay Men In Final Fantasy VII

Final fantasy VII 7

At the time: A joke played at both Cloud and any (assumed-to-be-male) player's expense, it's revealed the only way to get into one Don Corneo's mansion is by dressing as a couple of "babes", resulting in a fetch-quest that sees Cloud acquire the requisite materials. The sequence also includes a visit to Bro's Gym, where both Bro and his group of friends are played as suggestive, more predatory gay men - again for the sake of comedy.

Now: Whilst one particular author has written a fantastic article about how Cloud donning a dress actually really helped them live a more comfortable life, there's no doubt this experience would be in the minority. As mentioned in the introduction, Bioware are patching out a character simply talking about their former name after transitioning to a new identity, never mind the idea of playing off the act of cross-dressing as 'hilariously awkward'.

Then there's the portrayal of gay men as being inherently predatory - an outdated mentality the likes of Richard Simmons made a career off - and in FF VII's case, a scene where Cloud gets involuntarily groped and felt up in a jacuzzi by a number of larger, burlier and more aggressive homosexuals.

Check out the clip above - it really is rather something when seen through a modern lens, and it'll be a miracle if the remake keeps this scene in any form.
