Who would have thought a game that was essentially the video game equivalent to the movie The Sandlot would take off like it did.

Backyard Baseball wasn't your typical baseball game. For starters, back in the infancy of the series, it was exclusively played on Windows and Macintosh. Which led to a very basic, yet fun gameplay experience thanks to the left mouse button being responsible for nearly everything. The game also featured power-ups for both batters and pitchers.

For batters, they could lay down a Crazy Bunt which would have the ball bounce around erratically, or the underground hit which did exactly as the name implied, send a hit underground past the infielders for an easy hit. Pitchers could also throw screaming fast "fireball" pitches or even ones that froze mid-air on their way to the plate.

Gameplay aside, it was the presentation that made Backyard Baseball so memorable. Backyard Baseball had you playing as kids rather than adults. Even the MLB players were in kid form as opposed to their adult selves. Not to be outshined by the pros, the "neighborhood kids" had some A+ players in their ranks. No one will ever pass on picking up Pablo Sanchez as their first pick. The roster of 30 kids and 30 MLB players, all with varying stats, lead to a lot of variety when it came to picking your team schoolyard style.

While the presentation and elementary gameplay make this game seem like a child's game, it was certainly enjoyable by all who played it, not just children. Even though the game sees sporadic releases today, nothing will compare to its early days.
