10 Best Directed Video Game Cutscenes Ever

7. Finding Ciri - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 is a little known game from 2015 that, surprisingly enough, under all of the Gwent and horse based physics simulation actually has a pretty decent story. Who would have known.

The narrative eventually leads Geralt of Rivia to a secluded island in search of his long lost ward Ciri. The scene that follows is wrought with emotion and heartbreak as Geralt slowly enters the room and finds Ciri unconscious on the bed. The camera focuses on anything other than her, the door, the furnishings, even Geralt himself as he stares over the empty space between them.

The emotion is palpable as Geralt makes his way tersely over to her body and holds her tight, accepting her death as he does so.

It's a scene with no words and music that builds slowly as the scene goes, starting dire and ending hopeful. It's hard to forget why this game won so many awards when it came out, and when Ciri eventually wakes up, it's even harder to not reach for the tissues.
