6. Midgar Title Card - Final Fantasy VII (Remake)
The Final Fantasy VII remake may not be out yet, but with the opening cinematic having been revealed, one thing is clear: Cloud and the team are back in a mainline entry, and for the first time they aren't polygonal monsters anymore.
The biggest advantage the remake has over the original is just how much Midgar shines. When Aerith drops her flower the camera pans out to reveal a bustling city street. Filled with people and cars, Midgar reveals a sprawling Metropolis that dwarfs Aerith in size.
Then the music swells and the entirety of Midgar is lay bare before the screen. The title card flashes and promising one of the biggest and best RPG's of the past few decades.
It's hard to believe then that the original game, while for its time, hugely advanced and graphically gorgeous, presents just a shadow of this sort of spectacle and scale. It follows the exact same beats, uses the same angles and tricks, but looking back on it it just all seems so dated.
Hopefully this remake lives up the expectations and improves upon what made FFVII so great in the first place, and lets hope Square Enix know what they're doing. Unlike some other companies that are taking a swing at remakes these days.
