The demise of the toys-to-life market, while a bad thing for many a company's bottom line, turned out to be a blessing in disguise for a certain purple dragon. Freed from the burden of promoting Activision's Skylanders toy line, Spyro Reignited was a cogent reminder of what made the eponymous dragon an icon of the original PlayStation era.

Toys for Bob didn't reinvent the wheel when remaking Spyro's trilogy of PS1 adventures. There are no new levels or gameplay mechanics for returning gamers to wrap their heads around. Instead, these are beautifully touched up versions of old classics that allow us to experience Spyro's world with the kind of clarity that simply wasn't possible 20 years ago. Every world and NPC is brought bursting to life with the kind of attention to detail you'd expect from a Pixar movie, making Spyro and friends relevant to a whole new generation of gamers.

Fortunately, the games themselves live up to their updated visuals, as they are still among the best 3D platformers of their generation. But even that wasn't enough to put them ahead of our next pick...
