5. Squirtle

Out of the three starter Pokémon, Squirtle is probably the smartest choice in terms of gameplay and battle.

This is because Squirtle is in the middle of Bulbasaur and Charmander in terms of attack and defense, as well as having a great range of attacks. He doesn't quite come into his own until later in the game when water types are more helpful, but he's still a more popular and viable choice than Bulbasaur.

Squirtle also featured quite heavily in the anime, which is where the character became quite popular. Squirtle is also quite popular for how cute the character actually is, which is definitely where a lot of his popularity comes from. It's a shame that his evolutions don't quite match up to his starting form, as if they did the Water type might be a bit more popular in the first generation.
