10 Best Horror Video Games Of 2020

1. Visage

Maid Of Sker
SadSquare Studio

You’d certainly be forgiven if you saw footage from SadSquare Studio’s Visage and mistook it for Hideo Kojima’s PT, a “Playable Teaser” for the cancelled Silent Hills game. Many games have tried to emulate Kojima’s ridiculously unsettling corridor of creepiness, and whilst many are good, Visage is more than just another PT clone. Consider this game, that started out its life on Kickstarter, a worthy heir.

With a plot similar to one of this list’s early entries, Song of Horror, this fright-filled venture has the player take control of Dwayne in the 1980’s as he explores a huge house that seems to have more rooms and hideouts than a medieval castle! Across three chapters, Dwayne attempts to discover as much as he can about the house’s previous occupants as well as the strange paranormal entity sharing the space with him.

Visage looks fantastic, adding to the immersion, and the sound design is top notch, as it is with most well-made horror games. The amount of things the player can interact with throughout their journey here is a wise design move. Allowing the player to interact with almost any object, turn on any light and explore any nook and cranny really gets the imagination running wild.

Another area where Visage shines and stands out is its ability to cover sensitive themes such as dementia and schizophrenia throughout its chapters. Combine all this with the thickest of atmospheres, some mysteries to solve and entities to avoid, there’s a reason Visage is loved by so many horror fans.
