4. Carrion

Maid Of Sker
Devolver Digital

Go on, admit it, sometimes it looks a lot more fun to be the villain than the hero. Well, in Carrion you get to do just that! Starting off as a disgusting red blob of alien-like matter, the aim of the game here is to slide and squelch your way through tight corridors and air ducts on your quest to escape the facility where the scientists and staff thought they had you contained. Cue deep American trailer voice… They were wrong!

Those same scientists who once poked and prodded you, plus the soldiers who are there to protect them, all get to feel your wrath as you attempt to make your way to freedom. The resulting carnage is as gruesome as it sounds and all takes place within a charming retro side-scrolling presentation. The sound effects and music here are exactly as you’d expect from a game featuring a monstrous being escaping a dark facility, chomping and squishing its way through anything or anyone it considers to be inconveniently placed or mildly annoying.

Over the game’s admittedly short runtime, not only will the monster increase in size the more it consumes but it will also be able to unlock flashbacks revealing its very own fascinating origins. So if you’re feeling rebellious, if you’ve had a bad day, or if you just want to try something a little bit different, give Carrion a go. Be the villain! Who knows, you might just prefer it.
