Whilst it seems the newer Hobbit trilogy is still dividing haters from those who love it due to wanting to be immersed in more silver-screen Tolkien lore, aside from this and the hilariously loveable 1977 film the original book has rarely been done justice outside of its own pages. Coming out right when we were throughly engulfed in Return of the King-fever, Vivendi's cutesy tale of a less weathered Bilbo just couldn't contend with the might of EA's movie/game tie-in (but more on that later). Instead thanks to some easily enjoyable by-the-numbers platforming and combat that could be a little unresponsive at times, the charming aesthetic that permeated cutscenes and character-designs couldn't excel this into the eyes of the mainstream. Still, for many who grew up reading the book in school or had checked it out following the movies, this more humourous tale was enjoyable purely off the idea of controlling Bilbo and realising all those ideas of what the characters and lands must look like in a video game for the first time.
