10 Best Lord Of The Rings Video Games

8. Guardians Of Middle-Earth

Chances are if Monolith released their console-MOBA in 2014 - thanks to the mass-coverage DOTA 2 has received as a televised video game e-sport - it'd fare much better than it did two years ago. Featuring one of the most over-the-top (and potentially insulting depending on how closely guarded you like your LOTR lore) introductory cutscenes, this top-down strategy title was too ahead of its time for its own good. 'Massive Online Battle Arena's are traditionally played on PC, as with the fidelity of mouse and keyboard control it's much easier to micro-manage crunching stats, planning attacks and coordinating scores of units at the same time. Going off the varying reviews this received on launch, it seemed critics either loved or hated it to drastically different degrees because of this, even though the core experience was incredibly solid and rewardingly deep if you stuck with it. Guardians definitely didn't pull any punches when it came to dropping you in the thick of it and explaining tutorial mechanics at light-speed, but for those who already had the right mindset to soak up exactly how to unleash your rump-kicking Gandalf alongside scores of troops - it was a dream come true.
