10 Best Lovecraftian Enemies In Video Games
4. The Elder God - Legacy Of Kain
Perhaps one of the few entries on this list that wears the mantle of Lovecraft loud and proud, the Elder God takes cosmic horror in its stride. Bearing a name that is plucked from the works of Lovecraft himself, the Elder God is essentially one of the deities from the Cthulhu mythos only with a little creative licence to differentiate itself.
A being that has existed long before recorded time, the Elder God is the main antagonist of the series. Called the driving force behind every single conflict in history, he (it?) is depicted as mass of tentacles, eyes and other fleshy bits in classic Lovecraft fashion.
The lore and story behind the god is fascinating with his abilities and backstory becoming some of the most engrossing Lovecraft fiction since the original works of the madman himself. He is considered the centre of the wheel of fate to which all souls pertain – allegedly, although Raziel disputes it – and can fleet between the spectral realm allowing him to act out with the chronological nature of time.
Being a mass of tentacles and eyes immediately draws attention to the Lovecraftian qualities of the beast, but it’s the cosmological scale and scope that make the Elder God so brilliant. That and time-hopping and incomprehensible nature behind the creatures.
And also, he resides beneath the land of Nosgoth, which is as Lovecraftian a name as you can get without copyright strikes.
