10 Best Lovecraftian Enemies In Video Games

3. The Reapers - Mass Effect

Like a lot of people, I was surprised when I played through Mass Effect and found it to be more than just your standard sci-fi space opera romp. And perhaps the biggest surprise was the Reapers and how they managed to draw from Lovecraft and create a truly engaging cosmological horror threat.

Lurking in the reaches of deep space, hibernating, the Reapers are a race of highly technologically advanced synthetic and organic ships. They are one of the oldest races in the known universe, professing - before the end of Mass Effect 3, anyway - to have no beginning, nor end. Sounds like Lovecraft.

What perhaps ties them most to the works of H.P. Lovecraft is the sense of scale that they work on. It is entirely apparent that they are working towards a goal beyond our comprehension, and are functioning in a way that we can’t understand.

They are one of the best representations of true Cosmological horror in video games, and while they don’t pertain to the traditional appearance of tentacles and eyes, they represent the true heart of Lovecraft. That of cosmological threats and beings beyond our comprehension.

I like video games, writing and writing about video games. Expect sarcasm and the dry wit of a Brit. And the occasional rant of a unhappy Scot. You know... the usual.
