10 Best Low-Level Monsters In Dungeons & Dragons
7. Kobolds
I know, I know again I’ve brought up a monster that is always fought by low-level players, but just like Goblins the humble Kobold is not normally played to their full potential. Kobolds are quite small and weak. In a straight-up battle, unless a party is swarmed, they should not lose to Kobolds. They are however not meant for frontline combat. You see Kobolds are very clever and fantastic trap makers.
If you are going to follow a Kobold into their home then prepare for a hard fight. Pit traps, rockfalls and boulders will be the least of your worries. Kobolds can work among a number of different level parties. For level one, just use the basic traps but anything above that and we need to get creative. How about murder holes? Great cover and ambush spots for the Kobolds that they can easily retreat from. Put down some ankle-deep water full of bear traps and when they get used to that stick some tripwires after it. Have you got some greedy players, stick a few poisonous snakes in the chests?
Kobolds and their traps are so adaptive there’s no reason not to have at least one dungeon that doesn’t involve them. You can even start adding poison to the arrows for extra impact. Be prepared for a long session, though, because your players are going to be very cautious after the first few traps.
