10 Best New Male Video Game Characters Of The Decade
1. Arthur Morgan - Red Dead Redemption 2
For all we've had some great characters these last ten years, it really wasn't ever going to be anyone else. Red Dead Redemption's insistence on realism did mean that some of the fun was sapped away from playing, but no one could seriously argue that Arthur isn't a magnificently drawn character.
He starts out as a fairly simple stock Western hero, with his barrel chest and his raw stubble. Quickly though, he develops into one of the most complex and well rounded hero either the Western genre or gaming as a whole have ever seen. Tender and strong at once, Arthur undergoes an evolution throughout Red Dead Redemption 2.
With the Wild West fading, Arthur's way of life is ending, and he looks back on his life of violence with abject remorse. His tuberculosis, contracted while, in his own words 'beating a man to death for a few bucks', acts as a karmic punishment for his actions, and even prior to the disease he spends much of the game chasing down the titular rebellion.
The argument for games as an art form has only grown stronger this decade, and exhibit A is surely Arthur Morgan.
