8. Joker - Persona 5
The Persona series has gone from a bubbling under cult hit to a bona fide phenomenon this decade, with Joker's game, Persona 5, selling over 2.7 million copies and currently sitting as the PlayStation 4's tenth best selling game. Late surges from the likes of Death Stranding or The Last Of Us Part II may yet knock it out of the top ten, but it's still a brilliant showing which demonstrates how far the series has come.
It wouldn't be fair to say that the success is entirely down to Joker, but the central protagonist of Persona 5 definitely played his part. He's a bit of an everyman, with the player choosing how he reacts to those around him and which relationships he pursues, but the basic structure of the character is solid.
His animated battle style, wealth of Persona options and inclusion in Super Smash Bros Ultimate have seen him pick up a plethora of fans.
Persona 5 itself can be hard to get into, with the game throwing a lot of lore and the very creepy Kamoshida at you right at the start, but Joker's dynamic with Ryuji, Morgana and Ann should carry you through.
