7. Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

The first entry on this list talked about how Persona evolved from a Shin Megami Tensei spin-off into its own separate beast. SMT IV: Apocalypse sees the Tensei series learning from its triumphant progeny, and the results are glorious.

The Tensei games traditionally revolve around a single protagonist saving the world on his lonesome, but Apocalypse shakes things up by having your character joined by one of the best ensembles of the past decade. From Fairy Queen Nozomi to the pompus spectre Navarre, Apocalypse's stellar writing breathes life into each member of your party and ensures that the story's hardest-hitting beats connect with the force of a freight train.

This stellar character work, combined with the Tensei series' traditional strengths (excellent combat and best-in-class world-building) makes for one of the greatest RPG experiences of the past decade, and one that escaped the notice of far too many 3DS owners. If that includes you, pick this up and enjoy battling through the end times with one of gaming's greatest crews.
