2017's revival of the 3D platformer hit a bit of a speed bump with the incredibly bland Yooka-Laylee, but Snake Pass is an even smaller game that dares to play completely differently to how it looks.

Thanks to a momentum and physics-based control scheme that governs everything from whether you're 'aiming' Noodle's body up or down to the tightness of his coiled grip, to even asking helper-bird Doodle to pick up your tail for a boost, just getting the hang of base movement is a finger-pretzel'ing challenge in itself.

Once you do though, the fun and weirdly addictive flow of Snake Pass comes in what would in other games, be the most mundane things. Climbing to increasing heights takes on an element of danger when you know getting one button press wrong might cause Noodle to slip, and it's this potent feeling of old-school Tomb Raider exploration and new-school Havok physics that give Snake Pass a really innovative overall feel.
